Description:

Research and education on the value of green spaces is broad, with results ranging from the proven and tangible to the qualitative. If fact, green spaces themselves have quite the range, from those dedicated to providing food to those simply providing enjoyment. No one area of study or type of space can offer solutions that address all the layers and sciences involved in building heathy, sustainable environments and communities.

Keeler Gardens, a small, nonprofit, community nature space has taken a novel approach to improving the environment, looking to results from work in multiple disciplines, such as the biology and chemistry of soil science, and the psychology of the biophilia hypothesis. In a comprehensive compilation of results from a wide range of research and experiences, we present how each discipline has dramatic importance and that they are connected. As part of the discussion we also delve into how Keeler Gardens is implementing procedures to support the health of its local urban community and community members, with a goal to act as a model to offer solutions, in many different disciplines, that fit specific needs in diverse urban communities.
