Bioinformatics (Minor)
Bioinformatics incorporates computer science, statistics, and information technology to create tools for processing and analyzing biological data. Computational biology is the advancement of understanding of living systems through computation.
The Minor in Bioinformatics at Illinois Tech blends biology and computer science courses to offer a well-balanced mix of both skills, while many other programs are biased toward biology or computer science.
The program begins by introducing core concepts of bioinformatics, including Linux and Perl programming, genetics, transcriptomics, data structures, and algorithms. Electives build off these fundamental skills through topics such as human biology, population genetics, cell biology, discrete structures, data mining, database organization, and statistical methods.
Discover new methods of solving real-world problems by creating new solutions with training in bioinformatics. This training not only will help while working within a team, but also will aid in team leadership.
