Research Interests
The research work in Dr. Khan’s group focuses on the design and development of new materials including nanomaterials of desirable properties and functions suitable for applications in such areas as catalysis, chemical and biochemical sensing, energy storage, and biomedical usages. Emphasis is on inexpensive and environmentally benign ‘sustainable’ materials. A major objective is to gain an insight of the fundamental structure-properties relationships in materials and controlling their architecture at the atomic and molecular level. The interdisciplinary research program provides opportunities for graduate and undergraduate students, postdoctoral associates, industrial researchers, and high school and college Teachers to working in a collaborative environment involving universities, Argonne National Laboratory and Industry. It uses modern synthesis approach and employs a variety of materials characterization techniques in combination with modeling and computational methods. Dr. Khan’s scholarly work has appeared in ~100 publications and been featured at many national and international conferences as well as in leading publications like Science, Science News, and Chemical and Engineering News Magazines. It has been supported by the National Science Foundation, Petroleum Research Fund of the American Chemical Society, Alfred P. Sloan Foundation, Argonne National Laboratory, IIT Research Institute, Illinois Institute of Technology, Pritzker-Galvin Challenge Grant, and Industry.
Dr. Khan’s passion for education extends beyond his teaching and research work to also include curriculum development. At Illinois Tech he has pioneered innovative professional programs that combine the rigors of science education with business principles, preparing graduates for various science careers post-graduation. Dr. Khan has also been a key contributor in designing several undergraduate and graduate level courses.
In addition to his role as a professor, lead Researcher, and Mentor, Dr. Khan has also served in numerous academic leadership positions including: Program Director, Department Chair, and Associate Dean of the College of Science and Letters at Illinois Tech and a visiting Scientist at the US Department of Energy’s Argonne National Laboratory, Nanoscience and Nanotechnology Division, Center for Nanoscale Materials.
