Safety and health at Illinois Institute of Technology must be part of every operation. IIT strives to maintain a safety and health program conforming to the best practices and to instill the proper attitudes toward injury and illness prevention on the part of Faculty, Staff, Students, contractors, tenants and visitors of all levels. 
The Department of environmental Health and Safety ensures that work undertaken by faculty, staff, students, tenants, contractors and visitors does not cause undue environmental damage, put the community health and safety at high risk, complies with applicable legislation and follows best practices. 

The aim of the department of Environmental Health and Safety is:

1. The protection of the Illinois Tech Community, their health, and the natural environment.
2. Compliance with legal requirements and regulatory standards.
3. The increase in productivity, and morale that comes with a safe and healthy environment.
