Description
Collective instabilities of charged particle beams reflect our success in their accumulation up to so high intensity that destructive cross-talk between the beam particles overcomes stabilizing factors of the external fields. Transverse instabilities are especially dangerous, since they normally lead to a significant or full beam loss. Specific destabilizing roles of the Coulomb fields and electromagnetic wake fields will be discussed. A special accent will be made on the recent progress in understanding and modeling of the collective effects when both Coulomb and wake fields are important, which is typical for low and medium energy hadron beams.
