Continuing with our Cybersecurity Research Seminars, the ECE Department has the pleasure to present one of our own faculty and Distinguished-Speaker, Erdal Oruklu, Ph.D.
Dr. Oruklu will impart the knowledge he has cumulated in his research of "Cybersecurity Challenges in Wearable Medical Devices."
ABSTRACT
Wearable Medical Devices (WMD) in personal health monitoring applications can be victim of cyber security attacks. There are multiple concerns:
- Security and robustness–The WMD platform should be ready to deal with as many threats as possible, and in case of breach, it should be able to function when some of its components are down.
- Safety–Any action taken by the WMD should never endanger the patient. That includes control algorithm safe commands, malfunctioning/anomaly response, alarm system and emergency situations.
- Usability–Balance simplicity (less chance of failure) against the added complexity of a more secure environment (which protects from both attacks and data leaks).
This talk will present a mobile Artificial Pancreas (AP) system based on an Android smartphone. Such a platform relies on of-the-shelf components (continuous glucose monitoring, insulin pump, physical activity sensors) and a multivariable closed loop control algorithm to determine its behavior. Safe and secure operation of the AP with enhanced security protocols will be discussed.
BIOGRAPHY
Erdal Oruklu received his B.S. degree in electronics and communication engineering from the Technical University of Istanbul in 1995 and the M.S. degree in electrical engineering from Bogazici University, Istanbul, Turkey in 1999. He received his Ph.D. degree in computer engineering from the Illinois Institute of Technology, Chicago, Illinois in 2005. He is currently an Associate Professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the Illinois Institute of Technology, where he is also the Director of the VLSI and SoC Research Laboratory. Dr. Oruklu’s research interests are reconfigurable computing, advanced computer architectures, secure hardware design and ultrasonic signal processing & imaging. He has over 100 peer-reviewed publications in journals, conference proceedings and he co-authored five book chapters. Dr. Oruklu is a member of the technical program committee of IEEE Ultrasonics Symposium and he serves as the Vice-Chair for Sensors, NDE & Industrial Applications Group since 2015. Dr. Oruklu is a senior member of IEEE.
