The Electrical and Computer Engineering department will be hosting a seminar featuring Dr. Brent Stephens, Ph.D., Associate Professor of Department of Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering at Illinois Institute of Technology. The topic of the seminar will be Advances in Building Energy and Air Quality.

Abstract

Buildings have a major impact on energy and the environment. Buildings account for over 40% of the total amount of energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions in the U.S., and they also represent environments where people spend most of their time and are most exposed to a number of pollutants of both indoor and outdoor origin. Research conducted in the Built Environment Research Group at Illinois Tech continues to allow for a better understanding of energy use in buildings, connections between energy use and indoor air quality, and how varying indoor exposures to airborne pollutants can adversely impact public health. In this talk, I will highlight some recent advances in building energy and indoor air quality research, describing several of our recent projects.

Speaker’s Biography

Dr. Brent Stephens is an Associate Professor in the Department of Civil, Architectural, and Environmental Engineering at Illinois Tech. He directs the Built Environment Research Group where he and his team investigate energy and air quality in the built environment. Dr. Stephens currently serves as Secretary of the International Society for Indoor Air Quality and Climate (ISIAQ), Chair of the ISIAQ Scientific and Technical Committee (STC) 21 on Ventilation, and Member and Research Subcommittee Chair of ASHRAE Technical Committee 2.4 on Particulate Air Contaminants and Particulate Contaminant Removal Equipment. Dr. Stephens has published over 40 peer-reviewed journal articles, editorials, and commentaries in his career. His research has been funded by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation (APSF), the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating, and Air- Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE), the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) through the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), the Air-Conditioning, Heating and Refrigeration Institute (AHRI), and the National Air Filtration Association (NAFA) Foundation.
