The Electrical and Computer Engineering department will be hosting a seminar featuring Eric Krenz from Motorola Mobility LLC. The topic of the seminar will be Mobile Phone Antenna Design and Measurement: Evolution and Challenges.

Abstract

In the 32 years since the commercial introduction of the hand-held mobile phone, it has evolved from a relatively large and simple device operating on a single frequency band, to a small and highly complex one supporting at least 18 bands and multiple airlink technologies. Even as the antenna banding requirements have increased, the industrial design challenge has become more constraining, and the radiated performance has become more scrutinized under developing performance standards. Looking to the future, as 4G (4th Generation) systems are fully deployed and 5G systems are developed, these trends will accelerate. This seminar discusses, in both historical and forward-looking terms, the challenges, goals, and techniques of hand-held mobile device antenna design and how the performances of these designs are measured. This is joint work with Mohammed Abdul-Gaffoor.

Speaker Bio

Eric Krenz received the BSEE from the University of Wisconsin in 1988 and the MSEE from the Illinois Institute of Technology in 1993. He has worked in various transceiver and antenna-related R&D roles at Motorola (Motorola, Inc.; Motorola, a Google Company; and Motorola, a Lenovo Company) since joining the company as a researcher in its Corporate Research Labs in 1988. In addition to cellular phones, he worked on pre-802.11 WiFi systems, satellite and aerial vehicle antennas for communication, RFID systems, and antenna measurement systems. He is one of the original primary authors of the industry standard test plan for cellular phone radiated performance, the CTIA OTA plan, and is a past co-chair of the working group that created it. He holds 30 issued patents with others pending. Eric is currently the Director of Antenna Research at Motorola Mobility.
