Armour College of Engineering Professor of Civil and Architectural Engineering, Jamshid Mohammadi, will be giving a Security Engineering Themes Lecture on "Why Bridge's Fail".

In light of the August 14, 2018 failure of the Morandi Bridge in Genoa, Italy there is much attention to what causes a bridge failure. Although designed properly following the standards of practice, bridges occasionally fail. It is noted that compared with other catastrophes around the world, bridge failure is a rare event. However, any bridge failure makes headlines and naturally raises concerns over the condition of existing bridges – especially those that are heavily used every day. In this lecture, an overview of different types of bridges is presented. Causes of bridge failure, as reported in the past events, are introduced. Several notable bridge failure cases and their known causes are reviewed and explained.
