IIT Movie Night—Codebreaker: The Alan Turing Story
Sponsor: Humanities Department
In 1954, Alan Turing, one of the key pioneers in the history of computing, took his own life after being convicted of homosexual acts by the British government. Turing had been a war hero, cracking German codes during World War Two, and was poised to become a critical part of postwar British computing. His achievements and his memory live on – not just as a computing pioneer but as an icon for gay rights. Discussion on the history of computing and sexuality to follow.
This film screening is among activities offered by IIT in honor of LGBT History Month, which celebrates the achievements and recognizes important moments in the history of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer people.
