Tornadoes in a Changing World
Host
PhysicsDescription
Recent extreme weather events have revealed a disaster landscape that suggests that the U.S. is increasingly vulnerable to weather hazards despite advances in science, technology, and mitigation. Specifically, catastrophic tornadoes and tornado outbreaks in the past few years have produced billions of dollars in damage and killed hundreds of people. In this presentation, Dr. Ashley will assess the atmospheric ingredients required to produce tornadoes, the unique dynamics that occur within their parent storms, how those extreme events interact with society to create weather disasters, and what we can expect from these hazards in the future in the face of rapid societal and environmental change.
