Crain’s Chicago Business has released its 30th annual 40 Under Forty list, which names young professionals in Chicago who have made a significant impact on the city and its communities. This year Dawveed Scully (ARCH ’10), an associate director at Skidmore, Owings & Merrill and an adjunct professor and alumnus of the College of Architecture, has been recognized for his work as a young, visionary architect.

Specifically, Crain’s makes note of Scully’s efforts to find a use for the former Michael Reese Hospital complex in the Bronzeville neighborhood of Chicago, which date back to his time as an intern at SOM during the city’s attempt to court the 2016 Olympics in 2009. Most recently, Scully and his colleagues have worked with the GRIT development team on a proposed redevelopment plan for the property that includes a community center, a data center, and a life sciences campus.

At SOM, Scully specializes in complex urban planning projects, while simultaneously helping lead the firm’s approach to community engagement. He has worked on the Detroit East Riverfront Framework Plan, and led a strategic vision plan for the Atlanta University Center, a consortium of several historically Black colleges and universities. In 2018 the Urban Land Institute’s Chicago Chapter named him Young Visionary of the Year and in 2020 he was selected for Leadership Greater Chicago’s Class of 2021.

“I’m excited and honored to be selected for Crain’s Chicago Business 40 under Forty, and looking forward to continuing my focus on design work that empowers residents and communities who have historically been left out of these processes,” says Scully. “Design is a collaborative process and only together can we create holistic, sustainable, and authentic places and create the world we all deserve.”

The full profile of Scully can be found on the Crain’s Chicago Business website.
