Fields Medalist Martin Hairer Visited Department of Applied Mathematics

Martin Hairer, who won the Fields Medal in 2014, visited Illinois Tech’s Department of Applied Mathematics on October 27 to meet with faculty and students and deliver a lecture, “Ergodic theory of singular stochastic PDEs.” The Fields Medal is regarded as the highest honor a mathematician can receive–the “Nobel Prize in math,” as there is no Nobel Prize in math.

Hairer developed a mathematical theory for singular stochastic partial differential equations, so that solutions to these equations make sense. This allows for stochastic modeling of various mechanisms in science and engineering.

Hairer is currently the Regius Professor of Mathematics, Mathematics Department, University of Warwick. He is a Fellow of the Royal Society, a Fellow of the American Mathematical Society, and has received many other honors and awards. He also created the sound-editing program Amadeus.
