IIT Applied Math Undergrad Receives Best Physics/Math/Engineering Award at 2012 CAURS Event

Barrett Leslie (AMAT 3rd year) received the award for the best physics/mathematics/engineering presentation at the 2012 Chicago Area Undergraduate Research Symposium event held March 3, 2012, at the Holiday Inn Mart Plaza in Chicago. The presentation "Comprehending the Menger Sponge" discussed research by Leslie and his coauthors, Bassil Alcheikh and Brian Pichardo. The research team investigated the Menger Sponge and gained insight into abstract concepts governing rules of dimension and curve produced by "Menger slicing." The team's research showed that a diagonal cross-section of the sponge stretches the square holes into diamond shapes and that intersections of holes from three directions produces a six-sided star shape. The team's future research will further explore Menger Sponge symmetry.

CAURS is an annual event co-sponsored by Illinois Institute of Technology, where undergraduates present their research, network, attend roundtable discussions, watch oral presentations, and meet other student researchers.
