Ky Fan Visiting Scholar Visits Illinois Institute of Technology

Professor Jinqiao Duan hosted this year's American Mathematical Society (AMS) Ky Fan Scholar, Zongxia Liang of Tsinghua University, China, for research collaboration and to present a colloquium talk. Speaking on "Stochastic Flows and their Spatial Asymptotic Behaviors," Liang attended the 2009 Karl Menger Lecture and Awards, and spent several days discussing research possibilities with the Applied Mathematics department faculty.

Started in 1999 with a $1 million donation, the Ky Fan and Yu-Fen Fan Endowment supports academic exchanges between American and Chinese mathematicians through travel awards and stipends. In addition to this, the Endowment also promotes the interaction of mathematically talented high school students in the U.S. Ky Fan is an internationally acclaimed mathematician, who held positions at Princeton, Notre Dame, Wayne State, and Northwestern Universities. He is professor emeritus of University of California at Santa Barbara, and is best known for the Ky Fan inequality and the Ky Fan metric.
