Li Named ACM Distinguished Scientist and IEEE Fellow
The Association for Computing Machinery (ACM), the world’s largest educational and scientific computing society, has named IIT Computer Science Professor Xiangyang Li a Distinguished Scientist. Li is one of 49 ACM members selected in 2014 as a Distinguished Educator, Scientist, or Engineer for their individual contributions and singular impacts on the field of computing.
ACM President Alexander Wolf called them “drivers of the advances and inventions that are propelling the information revolution in new directions. Their creativity and commitment to their craft ensures that we will benefit as a society in the digital age.”
In addition, Li was recently named a Fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) for contributions to performance analysis and resource allocation in wireless networks. The IEEE Fellow is the highest grade of membership and is recognized by the technical community as a prestigious honor and an important career achievement.
Li has received more than $10 million in funding over the past 10 years for his research from the U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF), the People’s Republic of China (PRC) National Natural Science Foundation (NSFC), and other sources. His research focuses on wireless networks, mobile computing, privacy and security in big data, cyber physical systems, social networking, and algorithms. Current NSF projects include “Coordinated Real-Time Traffic Management Based on Dynamic Information Propagation and Aggregation Under Connected Vehicle Systems”; “EARS: Modeling and Analysis of Radar/Communications Spectrum Sharing Opportunities”; and “EARS: Providing Predictable Service and Spectrum Access With Real-time Decision in Cognitive Multi-Hop Wireless Networks.”
Li has published more than 300 peer-reviewed articles in top journals and the proceedings of international conferences. His articles have been cited more than 10,000 times. Li and his students received the best paper award at ACM MobiCom 2014, the Annual International Conference on Mobile Computing and Networking; COCOON (Computing and Combinatorics) 2001; and IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers) HICSS (Hawaii International Conference on System Sciences) 2001. They were also candidates for the best paper awards at ACM MobiCom 2008 and ACM MobiCom 2005 and won the best demo award at ACM MobiCom 2012. Li received PRC NSFC Outstanding Young Researcher awards in 2008 and 2012.
Li is an EMC Visiting Chair Professor at Tsinghua University (through July 2017). He has been a distinguished visiting scientist at Tsinghua National Laboratory for Information Science and Technology (TNLIST) at Tsinghua University and a visiting professor at Microsoft Research Asia, Hong Kong Baptist University, and Hong Kong University of Science and Technology.
Li earned his M.S. and Ph.D. in computer science from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, and bachelor’s degrees in computer science and business management from Tsinghua University.
