Stuart Alumni, Board Members Honored as Illinois Tech Alumni Awards Recipients
Stuart School is pleased to announce that four recipients among the Illinois Institute of Technology’s 2017 Alumni Awards recipients are Stuart alumni and/or members of the Board of Advisors. They include:
Galvin Award: Rosemarie Mitchell, Chair, Stuart School of Business Board of Advisors
This award honors non-alumni and recognizes an individual whose service, leadership, and philanthropy have significantly advanced the university.
Lifetime Achievement Award: the late Robert Growney (ME ’74, M.B.A. ’82), Former Chair, Stuart School of Business Board of Advisors
This award is bestowed posthumously on an individual who has recently passed away, achieved personal success, made an outstanding contribution to his or her chosen field, and achieved recognition among colleagues.
Alumni Service Award: Jeffrey Karp (CE ’79), Stuart School of Business Board of Advisors
This award honors an individual who demonstrates continuous, selfless commitment to and devoted enthusiasm for Illinois Tech through involvement in various areas of the university, including recruitment, support, service, and leadership.
John J. Schommer Honor I Award: Brad Krygier (MGT ’80)
This honor is awarded to alumni who excelled in both leadership and performance as student athletes at Illinois Tech and who also went on to achieve significant success after graduation.
The 2017 Alumni Awards luncheon and ceremony will be held Friday, April 21 at noon, at Hermann Hall. Reservations must be made by Friday, April 14.
About Rosemarie Mitchell
Rosemarie Mitchell, retired CEO of ABS Associates, has served on the Stuart Board of Advisors for over 20 years and is a member of the Illinois Institute of Technology Board of Trustees.
In 2011, Mitchell became chair of Stuart’s Board, increasing membership from 7 to 20 advisors while developing many key initiatives, including the formation of the Board of Advisors Mentorship Program.
Mitchell has given generously to the university and in 2015 led a fundraising effort to establish the Harvey and Dianne Kahalas Undergraduate Scholarship. She has served on numerous committees for the university and is committed to increasing awareness of the institution and its programs in the non-alumni population as well as in the greater community.
About Robert Growney (ME ’74, M.B.A. ’82)
In addition to serving as a former chair of the Stuart Board of Advisors, Robert Growney served on the IBIS Board of Advisors and was a life trustee for the Illinois Institute of Technology until his passing in 2016. In thanks for his service to the university, he received the Alumni Service Award in 2007.
Growney served as president, COO, and vice chairman of Motorola, Inc. and as a partner in Edgewater Funds, a private equity firm with over $1 billion under management. He was also the former director of Alion Science and Technology, an R&D company formerly affiliated with IITRI.
About Jeffrey Karp (CE ’79)
Jeffrey Karp, former CEO of Power Construction, is a long-time and active member of the Stuart Board of Advisors and has been a member of the Illinois Institute of Technology Board of Trustees since 2014. Karp also served on the Alumni Association Board of Directors (2008-2014) and as chair of the Alumni Awards Committee for five years.
In 1986, Karp joined Power Construction as a project manager and eventually rose to the position of CEO, which he held from 2003-2015. A member of the Advisory Board for the Civil, Architectural & Environmental Engineering department for more than 20 years, Karp has been a strong financial supporter of Illinois Tech. He established the Jeffrey & Molly Karp Family Scholarship Fund to benefit students from the Chicago metropolitan area majoring in civil engineering.
About Brad Krygier (MGT ’80)
Stuart alumnus Brad Krygier experienced many notable “firsts” as a student athlete. Krygier was the first Illinois Tech athlete to be invited by the U.S. Olympic Committee to compete in the National Sports Festival, winning the modern pentathlon gold medal four-man team event in 1979. In addition, he was the first CCAC Conference Champion in Cross Country in 1979, and the first athlete to complete in three straight Cross Country National Championships, setting a school record in 1979 in the 8K (26:14) that he held for the next 29 years. He set various school records and was named IIT Freshman Athlete of the year in 1977. After graduation, he coached the cross country team part-time from 1980-1984, leading them to the first CCAC team Conference Championship
Krygier is a senior financial analyst for Adventist Health System and serves on the Board of Directors for the Florida Hospital Credit Union. His previous roles include Vice President at Wachovia Bank, Assistant Vice President at SunTrust Bank, and National Sales Manager at System Innovators, Inc. In 2010, he was awarded Beta Gamma Sigma honors for MBA success.
