Professor and Chair of the Department of Mechanical, Materials, and Aerospace Engineering Sumanta Acharya was celebrated for his committed contributions to the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) as a recipient of its 2019 Dedicated Service Award.

Acharya has been an active member of ASME for more than 40 years and an ASME fellow since 1999. He has offered his time and efforts to the society’s Heat Transfer Division (HTD), of which he has served in many leadership roles, including division chair and executive committee member, and he has served as the conference chair and technical program chair for the division’s conferences.

He also has been a member of the Engineering Sciences Segment of ASME that oversees all conferences and events in the engineering sciences area, and a member of the Nominating Committee for the ASME Board of Governors.

ASME cited Acharya’s “sustained and dedicated service to the society through leadership in the Heat Transfer Division and the Engineering Sciences Segment and as an associate editor of the ASME Journal of Energy Resources Technology” as the reason he was chosen as the 2019 recipient of the prestigious award. He has also served as associate editor of the ASME Journal of Heat Transfer.

Acharya has also provided instrumental leadership in organizing ASME conferences. ASME has previously honored Acharya with the ASME 75th Anniversary Medal of the Heat Transfer Division in 2013, the ASME Heat Transfer Memorial Award in Science in 2011, and multiple teaching awards given by the ASME student chapter at his former institution.

Acharya says he is thrilled to receive the society-level Dedicated Service Award from ASME. “It is an honor to serve ASME and the technical community that has been part of my professional life since I was a graduate student,” he says.
