The GRE is optional for ALL master’s and master’s of science programs but can be submitted if you feel that they benefit your application.
The GRE IS REQUIRED for most PhD programs (please review the specific program page on our website for requirements for each program). The Institute of Design and Stuart School of Business accept the GMAT in addition to the GRE.
All degree-seeking applicants—except those eligible for the GRE waiver—are required to submit Graduate Record Examination (GRE) scores within Minimum Score Requirements.
GRE and GMAT scores are considered valid for five years from the testing date. If your scores are more than five years old at the time your application is reviewed, new scores will be required.
The department has the right to waive the GRE requirement for PhD applicants on a case by case basis, with proof of exceptional experience, research, and education. This is NOT guaranteed and the final decision is up to the approval of the department chair or program director.
The chart below shows the minimum recommended scores for admission consideration.
If your scores do not meet these minimum requirements, we encourage you to consider retaking the exam.

We require that official GRE scores are sent directly to Illinois Tech by the Educational Testing Service. Please ask ETS to send your scores to institution code 1318; no department code is required.
Please allow two to four weeks from the date of your test for delivery and processing of your scores. Your application status will be updated when we receive them.
Your scores will automatically match to your applicant file only if your name is spelled the same way on your GRE registration as it is on your Illinois Tech application. If your name is written differently on your GRE registration, please notify us at grad.admission@iit.edu. Your email should include your Illinois Tech applicant ID number, GRE registration number, testing date, and your first and last name as they appear on your GRE registration.
