Administrative Officer Employees are considered administrative officers if they (i) work full-time, (ii) qualify as a highly compensated employee under Section 414 (q)(1)(B) of the Internal Revenue code, and (iii) have any of the following titles: President, Provost, Vice President, Vice Provost, Associate or Assistant Vice President, or Associate of Assistant Vice Provost. |

Exempt Employee As defined by applicable Wage and Hour Law, exempt employees are those who are compensated for the work performed and not by the hours worked. These positions are not paid additional salary for hours worked in excess of 40 hours per week. |

Full-Time Employee Employees are considered to work full-time if the positions in which they are employed require a minimum of 38.75 hours per week. Full-time status allows for certain paid benefits such as holidays, vacation, and sick leave and other benefits as outlined in the Benefits section of this Handbook. |

Non-Exempt Employee As defined by applicable Wage and Hour Law, non-exempt employees are those who are paid for hours worked and entitled to overtime pay for all hours worked in excess of 40 hours per week. |

Part-Time Employee Employees are considered to work part-time and included into one of the two categories listed below if the positions in which they are employed require less than 38.75 hours per week.

Probationary Employee Employees during their first six months of employment with the university or employees during the first six months after transferring to a new and different position, exclusive of promotions and demotions. |

Retiree Employees who retire with five years of service and have attained age 55 are considered retirees. |

Temporary Employee Employees are considered temporary when they are retained for a defined period of time with no expectation of continued employment after the end of the defined period and: (a) their employment duration does not exceed 90 days for temporary employees who are expected to work at least 23.25 hours per week.; or ( b) their employment duration does not exceed 12 months for temporary employees who are expected to work fewer than 23.25 hours per week. Such temporary employees are not eligible for benefits.

Union Employee Employees covered by a collective bargaining agreement which defines the terms and conditions of their employment are considered union employees. For clarification, in the event of a conflict between the provisions of these Human Resources Policies and Procedures and the provisions of such collective bargaining agreement, the applicable provisions of such collective bargaining agreement shall control. |

Volunteer and Unpaid Intern Volunteers and unpaid interns are not considered employees of the university and are not entitled to compensation or benefits. An individual serving as a volunteer or an unpaid intern must meet the conditions of and be approved in accordance with the university’s policy regarding the same. |
