The Department of Physics at Illinois Tech is a small, research-oriented department where students at all levels work collaboratively in research groups that include faculty, other students, and postdoctoral associates. Physics faculty participate in a wide range of research projects on campus as well as at nearby Argonne National Laboratory and Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory. The Center for Synchrotron Radiation Research and Instrumentation operates the BioCAT and MRCAT X-ray beamlines at the Advanced Photon Source at Argonne, while physicists in the Center for Accelerator and Particle Physics work with scientists at Argonne and Fermilab on next-generation particle accelerators and ambitious high-energy particle experiments and their theoretical underpinnings.
Our undergraduate programs are unusual in that they include not just an introductory programming course in C/C++, but also courses in computational science and computational physics. These courses give practical, hands-on experience in numerical methods and programming. Computational methods are also integrated throughout courses.
