The Illinois Tech Digital Medical Engineering and Technology (IDMET) Research and Education Center was originally conceived as a collaborative initiative with Dassault Systèmes (DS) driven by a strong commitment to empower students to innovate through experiential learning and in response to the current marketplace demand for engineers equipped with advanced digital tools.
IDMET was officially announced on October 6, 2020. At its core, the center integrates and applies advanced digital tools in life science research and education. Specifically, IDMET uses the advanced digital solutions offered by Dassault Systèmes.
IDMET promotes and facilitates the use of advanced digital tools for modeling, simulation, and project management among researchers in biomedical science and engineering and works to incorporate the use of digital tools across the biomedical engineering curriculum to accelerate students’ readiness in digital innovation practices.
IDMET is committed to building strong corporate relations and securing partnerships and collaborations with various organizations. Expected outcomes include the generation of projects for students in training, corporate internships, support for the development of new educational approaches, and the formation of novel research teams working on projects supported by corporate funds.
Dassault Systèmes is a founding partner and sponsor of IDMET and has globally recognized it as the first 3DEXPERIENCE Education Center of Excellence in the Life Sciences in the United States. IDMET aims to become an academic education partner for continuing education of working professionals and an authorized Academic Certification Center for the application of Dassault Systèmes tools.
An overarching goal of IDMET, in close partnership with Dassault Systèmes, is to build a community, linked by the use of Dassault Systèmes’ 3DEXPERIENCE technology, to foster collaborations between industry and academia. These collaborations will bring researchers together to address contemporary challenges in health care while contributing to the development of a workforce that is knowledgeable in the application of advanced digital tools in the life science sector. IDMET’s main interest is in the medical devices, diagnostics, therapeutics, and pharmaceutical industries. The ultimate goal is to develop new technologies and solutions for diagnostic, treatment, and management of human disease in order to maintain and improve patients’ quality of life.
IDMET supports the Illinois Tech Strategic Plan by focusing on student success, incorporating computational skills across the curriculum, contributing to the institute’s corporate relations effort, focusing on one of the main strategic research areas for Illinois Tech (life sciences), and supporting Illinois Tech's goal to become a leader in reskilling the workforce.
